I was sad I had to work most days when my mom was here because my shifts at the hotel are so long. 10-hour shifts are the whole day. I was debating calling out because it's easy to do that here. But then my mom told me that my Uncle Roy died. Which I was so shocked by because he is a young guy. But because he died I could use my grievance pay for a day. Thank you, Roy. But, also so sad that he died. Gavin got to meet Roy in March of 2021 when we stayed at their house after Mexico. He was cracking us up. He was talking to Gavin and me like we had been a part of their lives for the past several years. They updated us on everyone and their dog that they knew. He sure didn't fail to put a smile on our face and I am sure he is doing the same with his brothers in Heaven.
We did some fun things with my mom during her stay. Mostly just a bunch of laughing and talking which we do best. We can have fun anywhere. The first night we went to Trivia at Chicken in a Barrell. Gavin and I are big trivia fans. Anytime we have a Friday night off we go. This week Braden and Eve came with Braden's family. I think we talked more about Taylor Swift than the trivia questions. Everyone but Braden's mom is a die-hard Swifty. She kept trying to get the conversations elsewhere. We didn't end up doing too well that night at Trivia. But the food and company is what I go for.
One of my favorite drinks in Hawaii is Boba. We tried to get some from Tina's on Oahu before my wedding but Tina wasn't filling well that day and decided to stay home. So typical in Hawaii. I hadn't found a good place on Kauai yet so we all went together and go some at this food truck. It was good but I did miss Tina.
We made our around the island stopping at all sorts of fun places. We went to the Kilauea lighthouse and listened to the waves crash against the rock while admiring the view. We then spent the afternoon eating snacks from Foodland at the famous Hanalei bay beach. Ava took a long nap so my mom and I were able to chat it up.
We took a beautiful hike up in Kapa'a. The views brought us over a lush jungle. After we relaxed on the beach. On the way home we were hungry so we pulled into a near by bar that looked like it had something everyone wanted. Clearly, this wasn't the place to go. I'm pretty sure the whole place was made of concrete and there weren't any tables out. It smelt like mushrooms and looked like everyone wanted to hurt me. After searching stopped at Tiki Tacos. I don't think anyone was overly excited. So we pulled up to Costco on the way back. I had never seen the Costco food line so long in my entire life. The guy was moving like a turtle up in the front. When we got the front we learned that it was his first day of work... after that I felt a little bad for complaining about how slow he going. Poor guy but I do think he could move his arms and feet faster to speed things up.
On Sunday we drove up Waimea Canyon and it was a bit cloudy so we had a hard time seeing the famous Kalepa Ridge Mountains. But we were able to stretch our legs on the hike and witness a full of birthday celebration on the cliff. So right there I would say is a win.
I loved having my mom come and stay with us. She and Ava shared the pull-out couch and I loved waking up to them in my house. My mom literally makes me laugh so hard. I think she is one of the funniest people I have ever met. Already looking forward to the next visit!
Maui Half Marathon
At Gavin's work party in December, he won a three-night stay at the Maui Westin. We thought it would be perfect to use it the weekend of the Maui half marathon.
We had Ava with us so was a fun extra bonus. Our hotel was way more bougie than I expected it to be. We had access to the lounge deck that had free breakfast, snacks, and pupus. You bet we were all over that place.
About a year ago Gavin and I came with my parents we saw a man with a "I am Jesus" sign on the street. My mom waved and said, "Hi Jesus." As we were driving to the hotel we saw him again on the side of the road in the same spot we saw him last year We passed him several times and never managed to get a solid picture. But this is what we got. We must have passed him so many times and every time we were laughing and smiling. We love Jesus!
One afternoon we were boiling hot after shopping and wanted a drink to cool down. Ava and Gavin love the Nerds slushies from Sonic so we went there. Gavin told the lady a small for him and an extra large slushy for Ava. When it came we couldn't believe how big they were. Who on earth can drink a slushy that big? All of us were chugging and didn't even make a dent in them. Now we know an extra large is too big.
One evening we went out to shop and walk around. We passed the most beautiful Banyon tree I had ever seen. At first, we thought we were seeing a bunch of different trees but as we got closer we realized they were all connected. Turns out people come to this part of Maui just to see this tree.
As we continued walking we came across the best Mexican food restaurant. The man that served us was so sweet. I could tell he had so much passion for his country and food. We enjoyed nachos and tacos! While we ate a gal was setting up her guitar to play live music. She had on the most see-through shirt we had ever seen. We called her See Through Shirt Girl. And her voice was horrible. We gave our food 5 stars but the music a half a star. Nonetheless, we still had a great evening. That night we wanted ice cream so bad but couldn't punch the bag to buy a 1 scoop ice cream cone for 10$. So instead we went to Safeway and bought a gallon of ice cream for the same price. We rushed home to eat it before it melted while we finished off the third "Love is Blind season 3" which by the way was just so cringe but so good.
The next day we drove around to Iao Valley Park where enjoyed some live music played by a local at what I'm guessing was 1st birthday party. I mean this guy was good we didn't want to leave after hearing him jam out. We took a bunch of silly pictures while we walked around.
We enjoyed plenty of pool time at the hotel. I don't think I got any pictures of us at the pool because we were having too much fun. There was a waterslide at the pool that we probably went down 15 times. I'm also pretty sure were some of the only adults going down. That night we went out to dinner with Gavin's aunt Pam and Uncle Doug. We went to this fancy restaurant on the water. Ava, and I chose the wrong seats at the table. The sun was right in our eyes. If we tried to open them and look straight ahead we were blinded. We both left our sunglasses in the car which was ironic because we bought them the first day we landed because of how bright it was. We both left ours on Kauai. We were trying to chat with Aunt Pam but the sun was consuming us. Uncle Doug notice us trying to shield our faces and let Ava borrow his glasses. She looked good! Aunt Pam was nice and let me wear her Maui Jims! The rest of the dinner consisted of coconut shrimp pasta and a beautiful sunset.
Gavin and I tried to train as hard we could for the race but I'm not going to lie the hardest part of the race is training. In Kauai, they aren't really any roads that are great for running. They are either on the hwy and not safe, have way too many hills, or are only a few miles long. So getting in the long runs was the hardest. We picked up the race packet at the hotel where we got a stroopwafel, and hair band for Gavin. Ready or not here we come!
The race started at 5:30am and luckily our hotel sat at the start and finish line. We snuck out of the hotel room and walked across the street to stand with the many runners at the start. The starting line is always a fun part of the race for me. I enjoy seeing the runners warm up, stretch, and eat. People get into their zone.
We decided that we would run the first half of the race together. The course was an out-and-back path. As we ran along the road we watched the sun come up. There was this family that should get a gold medal for their dedication to cheering. We saw them every mile. They must have been cheering on their mom because they were yelling for "mom." But I have no idea how they got around so fast.
At the turnaround point, Gavin said he was feeling awesome and wanted to run faster. He took off and I could see his red shorts from the distance when the road was really long. I was feeling pretty good myself until about mile 10. I don't know if it's because I didn't train or that I'm just getting older but I was struggling, to finish. My feet were hurting so bad. I don't ever get out of breath when I run it's just that my whole body starts to hurt all over. First it was my feet, then my hips and then my shoulder was cramping. I was doing everything I could to not walk. But I finished! Ava cheered me on as I crossed the finish line. I guess she rolled up about 5 minutes before I did and made it just time to see Gavin finish. I found Gavin in the shoot and he looked so dead. I think this was the most tired I had ever seen him. I guess he started hurting pretty bad after mile 10 and was doing everything he could to not walk the last three miles like me. I am happy that we finished! I do enjoy pushing my body hard like this. I think half marathons are my favorite race.
After we were so excited to eat food we stopped at the first place we saw. We must have been so delirious and famished from the run because once we sat down to wait for our food we realized that we made the worst choice ever. I think I ordered 5 lbs of pork and rice and Gavin got pork burrito. Ava was the only smart one who decided that she didn't want anything and was happy to wait for us till she found something she liked. As we sat to wait for our food we saw all these people walking around with these fresh acai bowls. We were so disappointed when we saw our food. Not only did it taste bad but I wouldn't even order this on a good day. We were so bugged we wasted 40$ dollars on garbage. To cheer ourselves up we walked door to get ourselves some yummy acai! After we ate we went to the lounge at the hotel to find they had free breakfast for us there.. How could we forget? Race brain I think. Good thing I ran a half marathon and was plenty hungry.
That afternoon we relaxed before driving up to Haleakala. When we got to the top we saw this girl posing with her arms out wide on a rock. We thought it looked so fun we gave it a go. Then someone saw us do it and they did it and so on for the rest of the night. We aren't sure if it's the best pose. But we felt awesome doing it.
We love you Mauai! We were definitely really sad to leave. Kauai greeted us back with a massive rain storm. Ava and I spent the rest of the day baking and relaxing.
It was a joy having Ava spend 2 weeks with us! I am sure going to miss her company and baking. A Hui Hou!
