There are three ways to see the beautiful Napali coast, by boat, foot, and helicopter. This summer we attempted it with ocean kayaking. We invited Sarah and Anna from Oahu to come with us. Thanks to people in our ward who let us borrow their kayaks, drop us off in Hanalei Bay, and pick us up at Polihale. We couldn't have done it without them. We started very early on Monday morning because we had no idea how long it was going to take us to kayak. We took off from Ke'e just after sunrise. We watched from the shore as one gentleman in his single kayak took off and over the break in 7 seconds. He made it look really easy. We followed shortly after making sure everything was strapped down in case we tipped. All 4 of us made it over the break and it was easy sailing from there. We saw several honu's as we paddled along the magnificent coastline. After a few hours, we stopped for some lunchables at Kalalau. We were surprised at how fast we made it to the first beach. Usually, it takes 6-10 hours to touch the sand of Kalalau by foot but we made it just about 2 hours. We didn't bring much with us besides food and water so we basked on the sand in our suits letting the sun kiss our skin. We let our backs and legs rest for a minute before packing up to head to Miloli'i.
We saw a tour group out in front of us and Gavin and I noticed how far from the coast they were we laughed because that was a ton of extra paddling they were doing. Well, a few minutes later we saw 10-foot waves right in front of us that were going to bring us crashing into the mountain. Luckily we all steered away in time saving us from a washout.
Our second stop was Miloli'i. There were a couple of naked hippies running around. Legit full-on naked. I couldn't believe it. Nake wild and free I guess. We took a long nap before meeting Mike our new hyp friend. He was a small guy but had the biggest smile one of those wide ones like a horse. We saw him take of his little kayak earlier that morning. He was hyping us up the whole time while were paddling. He was throwing us the shaka complimenting our landing. We loved meeting Mike!
We landed in Polihale just in time for a swim and the sunset. Anytime on the Napali Coast is always the best!
A few weeks later Gavin ran the half marathon! He trained pretty hard in the 12 weeks leading up to the half marathon. We both made a goal that we wanted to run at least 25 miles a week. It about killed us some weeks due to our schedules and visitors but we did it! It sure paid off for Gavin because he got 20th overall and PR by about 20 minutes! He came just around 1:32! I was so proud of him. We celebrated some Acai afterward!
