Spring on the Island: Anniversary, Hikes, Luaus & Friends

Spring means… It’s our anniversary! This year, we had just gotten back from our big Vietnam trip, so we kept it nice and simple. We got dressed up and went to Rum Fire. They always spoil us there with extra food and drinks, which makes the night even more fun.

We had an amazing sunset view and an even better dinner. I ordered the filet mignon because I never eat steak, and it came with their creamy mashed potatoes SO SO GOOD. But let me be real: the Brussels sprouts are my actual favorite thing on the entire menu. They also might be my favorite food in the whole wide world. It was the best night with Gavin and honestly, one of the best dinners ever!

Spring also meant hiking season! Anita, Qian, and I went to Makaleha Falls. The hike isn’t super steep, but it is challenging because you end up doing what feels like a million squats to get over tree branches and roots. It’s totally worth it, though we always have the waterfall to ourselves, and the swimming hole is so refreshing. It’s crazy how cold that mountain rainwater is.

I’ve done this hike several times without any issues, but a few days later I was at dinner with some friends, and one of them who works on the search and rescue team told me they had just rescued a girl at Makaleha the day before. A rock had fallen from the top and hit her. Tragically, she didn’t make it. I was so shocked and heartbroken to hear that. It really made me stop and reflect. You just never know what can happen. Life is such a gift, every single day. We had a super fun work event this spring! A brand-new luau is opening on the island, the luau did their first one performing for all the island concierges? That meant a full show and dinner FOR FREE! Honestly my jobs has so many perks!!

Everyone showed up in their best aloha gear, and the location for the luau could not have been more beautiful. We had a view of the mountains and the ocean. For the luau, the cast was small, with just a handful of performers, but they really brought the island magic.

During the luau, I realized... I don’t know if I’m really a Hawaiian food girlie. It just doesn’t have a ton of flavor to me and honestly feels a little heavy and unhealthy. I think it’s because I didn’t grow up eating it. BUT I will say the vibes, the drums, the dancers, the energy! That’s where it’s at. I definitely felt the spirit of the island in that show. They nailed it. One of my favorite things about living on the island is the wildflowers. They’re always blooming and unbelievably beautiful. I also love the wild chickens. I think I’ve gotten so used to the chickens being everywhere that I forget how funny and charming they actually are. Like, where else do you see chickens just casually running around all day? I love my island life and feel so grateful I get to call this home!
