For my 27th birthday, I decided to throw myself a party! I found out that my friend Madi’s birthday is the day after mine, and since we share pretty much all the same friends, we figured, why not just combine our celebrations! We decided on a cake decorating party, something I’ve been wanting to do for a while. It brought back memories of the time my mom threw me the same kind of party when I was 11. This time around, nine girls were coming, and I was going all out.

I spent the two days before the party baking non-stop. Every guest was going to decorate their own double-decker cake. With my new silicone pans from Amazon and "The Summer I Turned Pretty' playing in the background, I honestly didn’t mind. I just baked and baked and baked.

Madi has the most beautiful patio, and it ended up being the perfect place to host the party. We had candles and string lights, and we could even see the sun setting over the mountains which was SO dreamy. Since Hawaii is hot and humid we kept the cakes and frosting in the fridge until party time to avoid a melty disaster.

Everyone showed up dressed and looking so cute. And then... came the frosting. We had so many different colors it was the BEST. It was so fun to see everyone’s personalities come out through their cake designs.

Eve’s cake was stunning. She totally nailed the piping tips and made the prettiest flowers. Faye, on the other hand, had a bit of a struggle at first. Her frosting wouldn’t stick to the cake it was gloppy and sliding everywhere. Thankfully, I was at the other end of the table, because I would not have known what to do. But Ellie came to the rescue! With total patience and determination, she helped Faye smooth out the frosting.

Then came a shocker I wasn't expecting. Faye had watched a TikTok where someone made a cake look like a bunch of flower leis, and she was determined to recreate it. And somehow she nailed it. And this was her first time ever decorating a cake!! And let me just say her cake looked professional, like something out of a bakery! She kept saying, “This is my first time, I can’t believe it!” It turned out almost too pretty to eat.

Honestly, all the cakes turned out amazing. Ellie’s was covered in little lemons, Anita’s had perfect stripes, Courtney piped a shell, and Hannah’s cake had a bunch of sharks on it. They were all so darling. This was seriously one of the best birthday parties I’ve ever had with the girls.

On my actual birthday, the next day, Gavin and I went out to breakfast at Paco’s Tacos. We don’t go there often and every time we do, we remember why. It’s overpriced and honestly not that good. The burritos were a letdown, but hey, the day must go on!
One thing I’ve been meaning to do since moving here was bike the Kapaʻa bike path. So we gathered a crew Theo, Anita, and Chase and headed out. On the drive over, it was pouring rain, and I thought, “Welp, this might be miserable.” But, like true island weather, once we got to the east side, not a single cloud in sight. Yay!

We rented bikes from a sweet local shop and hit the trail. About five minutes in, Chase’s chain fell off (classic rental bike moment), but the guys fixed it quickly, and we were back on our way. We biked along the coastline with the sun on our skin and wind in our hair. We passed secret beaches and huge houses perched on cliffs, and we stopped a few times just to take in the view. This island is just so magical and beautiful.
By the end of the two-hour ride, we were so hot and tired and we didn’t even finish the whole path! But it was still so much fun. And now I can finally recommend it to guests with confidence!
My birthday night ended at Holoholo Grill with some of the best burgers EVER! They put this jam on them that’s seriously to die for. Plus, Riley came over and gave us his discount, so dinner only cost $16. Major win!
And of course, the day ended with our usual Tuesday night pickleball. Because what better way to close out your birthday than running around in a cute outfit with your friends?
Cheers to 27!
